Nine CIAA Athletes Qualify for 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS - The field for the 2022 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships was announced recently and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will be represented by a total of nine student-athletes (6 men and 3 women) from four members institutions, qualifying to compete across seven events.

Johnson C. Smith University will have five athletes in competition at nationals led by CIAA Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year Warren Williams, who qualified in the 110-meter hurdles. Joining Williams as an individual qualifier on the track is teammate Justin Steele, who will compete in the 200-meter dash.

Additionally, Steele will compete as a member of JCSU’s 4x100-meter relay team that also features Stephan Dill, Asante Fazarro, and Zephaniah Cox, Jr.  

Lincoln (PA)’s Glenn Butler is the conference’s lone men’s qualifier in field events, competing in the high jump. Butler was the CIAA’s Field Athlete of the Year during both the indoor and outdoor season this year.

On the women's side, Reigning CIAA indoor co-champion Fayetteville State will feature two athletes, Mya Johnson and M’Smyra Seward.

Johnson, who was named CIAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Year this outdoor season, will compete in the 400-meter hurdles while Seward will compete in the women’s long jump.

Also qualifying for nationals is Claflin’s Zaria Nelson, who is set to the compete in the women’s discus throw.

The championships will be held May 26-28 in Allendale, Michigan at the Grand Valley State Track & Field Stadium. Grand Valley State University and the West Michigan Sports Commission will serve as co-hosts of the championships.
