Lincoln (PA) edges Bluefield State 2-1 in sixth inning

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Lincoln (PA) broke through with two runs in the sixth inning and made it stand, edging Bluefield State 2–1 on Friday afternoon at the CIAA Softball Championship Tournament.

The game unfolded as a pitchers’ duel through five scoreless innings before the Lions finally struck in the top of the sixth. Lincoln used timely hitting to manufacture two runs and take the game’s first lead.

Bluefield State answered in the bottom of the sixth with a run to cut the deficit in half, but Lincoln’s pitching staff and defense tightened late. The Big Blue put the tying run aboard in the seventh inning, but the Lions recorded three outs to close out the win.

Ashlynn Sherman picked up the victory for Lincoln, working six innings and allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts. Chloe Foster came on in relief in the seventh and secured the save.

Yonah Rogers went the distance for Bluefield State, turning in a strong outing despite the loss. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits, striking out four in seven innings of work.

Offensively, Lincoln finished with eight hits, with Samiah Smith and Amari Frederick each scoring a run. Bluefield State collected six hits and played clean defensively, committing no errors in the loss.

With the victory, Lincoln advances in the CIAA Softball Championship Tournament and will face the winner of the Bowie State vs. Virginia Union matchup in its next contest.
