She began her career officiating USTA (United States Tennis Association) matches for Adults and Juniors in 1994. Since that time, she has officiated Division 1, High School and has also called lines at some Professional tennis matches. She has also officiated at the HBCU National Tennis Championships in Georgia. Elam is a life member of the ATA (American Tennis Association) and was the chief umpire in charge of officials for their annual national tennis championship that has been held around the country for over 15 years, several of which were held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, FL. Elam started tennis officiating for CIAA in 2005 when the schools were just starting to use officials for tennis. Being the mother of 2 HBCU graduates who played on the men’s and women’s tennis teams at their college is when she started that journey and has continued in that capacity ever since. Elam currently reside in Midlothian, Virginia and work as a Program Support Technician Senior for the Virginia State Police.
