Fayetteville State Edges Bowie State 49–46 to Return to CIAA Championship

BALTIMORE, MD — February 27, 2026 — Fayetteville State (21–4) is headed back to the CIAA Women’s Basketball Championship after outlasting Northern Division contender Bowie State (19–8) in a gritty, defensive-minded 49–46 semifinal victory Friday evening at CFG Bank Arena. Powered by a commanding all-around performance from Food Lion Player of the Game Nyah Wilkins, the Broncos booked a championship showdown with Winston-Salem State on Saturday, February 28 at 1:00 PM. The title matchup adds another layer of intrigue, as the two rivals split the regular-season series, each winning on their home court.

From the opening whistle, Fayetteville State embraced the physical tone of the semifinal. Wilkins immediately asserted herself inside, scoring the game’s first points, attacking the boards, and spearheading a defensive unit that forced Bowie State into early turnovers and rushed possessions. She finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, and two assists, delivering one of the most complete performances of the tournament.

The Broncos built an 11–10 edge after one quarter and extended the lead to 26–24 at halftime behind the steady hands of Talia Trotter, who orchestrated the offense with patience and vision. Trotter posted 10 points, five assists, six rebounds, and five steals, proving once again why she is one of the CIAA’s premier two-way guards. Key bench contributions from Nevaeh Colon and Taleah Stephens supplied timely bursts of scoring, allowing FSU to maintain control despite Bowie State’s defensive pressure.

The third quarter belonged to the Bulldogs, who exploded for 19 points—led by Malaka Cobb and Mayah Garner—to seize a 43–38 lead, their largest advantage of the night. Bowie State used a barrage of threes and transition scoring to swing momentum, capitalizing on turnovers and fueling a surge that had the FSU faithful holding their breath.

But in what has become the Broncos’ trademark this season, they responded with poise.

Wilkins began the fourth quarter with fierce energy, and FSU immediately chipped into the deficit. Colon ignited the rally with a deep three-pointer at 9:52, pulling the Broncos within 43–41.

Moments later, Alivia Evans buried a clutch triple from the left wing to make it 45–44, placing all the momentum firmly back on the Broncos’ side.

Trotter then delivered the defining swing of the semifinal, picking a pass at midcourt and finishing a fast-break layup at 2:45 to give Fayetteville State a 46–45 lead, its first advantage since early in the third quarter. The Broncos extended the margin when Wilkins powered through contact for a layup at 1:51, making it 48–45 and sending the FSU bench into a frenzy.

From there, the Broncos slammed the defensive door.

FSU held Bowie State scoreless from the field for the final four minutes, contesting every shot and dominating the glass. Even as Bowie State closed within two behind late free throws, the Broncos remained composed. After drawing a foul with eight seconds left, Trotter calmly sank the second of two free throws—pushing the lead to 49–46—giving Fayetteville State the crucial separation it needed.

Bowie State’s last gasp came on a deep three from Afia Owusu-Mensah at the buzzer, but it bounced off iron as the Broncos secured their return to championship Saturday.

With the win, the Broncos earn a long-awaited championship rematch with Winston-Salem State, a rivalry now renewed on the tournament’s biggest stage. Each team claimed a home win during the regular season—but only one can claim the title in Baltimore.

Tip-off for the 2026 CIAA Women’s Basketball Championship Game is set for Saturday at 1:00 PM at CFG Bank Arena.
