Ettrick, Va. (Apr. 25, 2025) - The 2025 women's tennis championship kicked off Friday morning with six exciting matches, culminating with Johnson C. Smith and Shaw advancing to the CIAA Championship game on Saturday, April 26 after winning their quarterfinal and semifinal matchups.
In the opening match Livingstone took the doubles over Bluefield State. The Big Blue would then win the singles on court two, three five and six to win the match 4-2. Johnson C. Smith then swept the doubles over Elizabeth City State. They then won two singles matches to advance to the semifinals. Shaw University swept Virginia Union 5-0 with a clean sweep in all their wins. In the final quarterfinal match Winston-Salem State went up 2-0 after the doubles and won the sixth singles. The Rams then completed the upset over Virginia State winning 4-0 to advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals Shaw swept WSSU 4-0 winning all matches without surrendering a point in a single match. In the other semifinal match JCSU and Bluefield State went down to the last match. The Big Blue won the doubles and the threes and sixes in doubles. Whereas the Golden Bulls won the twos in three sets and fours and fives in straight sets. Finally, the ones went to three sets where JCSU won 7-6,5-7,7-5 advancing to the championship game.
