Durham, N.C. (May 3, 2024) - In the first event of the day, women's javelin, Shaw’s Kamile Patrick threw a new personal best and a NCAA qualifying mark of 37.77 meters. In the Men’s long jump, Markus White from Virginia State emerged atop the leaderboard with a 7.41-meter mark. Kahlil West finished with a jump of 6.95 meters which was good for second place and Jahaz Morgan close behind in third at 6.94 meters.
In the Women’s Long jump the top three finishers all had NCAA qualifying marks with M’Smrya Seward (6.09 Meters), Lanyjah Gunter (5.98 meters) and Charnessa Reid (5.87 meters) gathering the top three spots. The Men’s Shot-Put saw three different athletes throw over 15 meters. Mark Banberger from Virginia State finished in first at 15.65 meter throw, second was Zachary Jones from Virginia Union with a throw of 15.42 meters and from Union was Tajhir Tate in third with a mark of 15.22 meters.
The Men’s High Jump came down to a complete jump difference as all three athletes completed the 2.09 jump, but Jacolbli Morgan of Claflin completed it on his first attempt while Khalil West on his second, and Joseph Briscoe on his third attempt respectfully. The women’s shot-put saw Virginia State take home first place as Janiya Harmon had a mark of 13.14. Bowie State’s Joshua Carter won the men's pole vault as he jumped at 3.85.
The first event on the track was the women’s
1500 meter run which Rose Muturi of Virginia State won with a time of 4:44:60 which was only .04 seconds better than second place Irene Jeptoo of Fayetteville State. The men’s 1500 Virginia State took the top three spots with Desmond Kirwa, Jalen Brownlee, and Emmanuel Kipchirchir finishing in that order.
Both Virginia State and Winston Salem State managed to get two qualifiers in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with Lincoln claiming the top spot in the prelims. Three schools managed to get two runners to qualify for the finals in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Livingstone, Lincoln, and St. Augustine’s with JCSU and Virginia Union each getting one.
St. Augustine’s took the top spot in the Women’s 400-meter prelim and the Men’s 400 prelim Claflin took the top two spots. In 100-meter prelims for the women Winston-Salem State took the top two spots and Virginia State also got two runners to qualify. The men’s 100-meter prelim Claflin took first and third while Virginia Union took second and fourth place.
Fayetteville State managed to get four runners to qualify during the Women’s 800-meter run preliminaries. Virginia State managed to grab first and second in the men's 800-meter prelim, but Claflin had four runners qualify for the finals tomorrow. Johnson C. Smith managed to pick up first and second in the women's 400 hurdles prelims and WSSU also picked up two qualifiers.
Sean Kalawan of St. Augustine’s finished the Men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.89 which is fifth best in division 2. In total, SAU had three runners qualify for the finals, while Claflin had two. In the women’s 200-meter dash, WSSU picked up three qualifiers for the finals and picked up first and second place. The men’s 200-meter dash saw Johnson C Smith and Virginia Union both pick up three qualifiers with SAU and Claflin picking up one each.
On the men's side, Virginia State leads with 65 total points followed by Claflin with 25 points. The women’s side has Fayetteville State leading with 46 points and Virginia State with 26 points.
