Let’s take a look back and preview next Saturday’s matchups as conference play begins for all teams.
Bowie State 19 at Davenport 24
Amir Jenkins completed 39-of-59 passes for 350 yards and Christopher Ferguson recorded 105 receiving yards on six receptions, but the Bowie State Bulldogs fell to Davenport 24-19 on the road Saturday afternoon. Hasan Mosley, Keith Williams and Tyshawn Blow all added six tackles apiece to lead the Bulldogs defensively in the loss. Williams added a pair of breakups while Blow recorded a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry. Bowie State registered 32 first downs compared to the Panthers 17. BSU converted on 60-percent of third-down attempts going 12-for-20 on the day. The Bulldogs also went 1-for-1 on fourth down but recorded just 50 net yards rushing.

Walsh (Ohio) 14 at Johnson C. Smith 9
After scoring 49 points last week the Johnson C. Smith University football team fell to the Cavaliers of Walsh University 14-9, inside Irwin Belk Complex in their 2023 home opener on Saturday afternoon. Tyrell Jackson completed 29-of-39 passes for 256 yards and one touchdown, however he had a season high of five interceptions. Jacob Newman had 90 yards on 18 carries to lead the rushing attack, his brother Tim had 48 yards on 15 carries. Brevin Caldwell finished with 10 catches for 120 yards. The Golden Bulls finished 356 total yards, 256 passing, and 100 on the ground. The defense limiting the Walsh Cavs to 88 total yards with 55 rushing and 33 passing yards. Benari Black posted eight tackles, and three tackles for loss.

#24 Virginia Union 26 at Shaw 13
Virginia Union’s Christian Reid connected with Said Sidibe for a 41-yard touchdown pass while William Davis returned an interception 50 yards for a pick-six to lift VUU to a 26-13 win over Shaw University on Saturday in Durham, N.C. Reid finished the game with 232 passing yards while Sidibe had 91 receiving yards. Silas Cruse led Shaw's passing attack with 203 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown and two interceptions. Donte Lee Jr. scored on an 85-yard pass from Cruse and a school record 98-yard kickoff return to rally the Bears. Linebacker Elijah Adams showed out for the Shaw defense, collecting 10 tackles including three for loss. Kyree McLean added three tackles, one interception, and two pass breakups. Defensively, Shaw held up fairly well against the Virginia Union rushing attack, holding the Panthers to 136 yards on the ground.

Lincoln (PA) 48 at Post 32
Quarterback Isaiah Freeman was 13-for-21 on pass completions for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Lincoln (PA) Lions in their 48-32 road victory at Post. Running Back Amir Gerald rushed for 107 net yards on 21 attempts for two touchdowns. Wide Receiver Malachi Langley tallied 197 yards, on seven receptions for three touchdowns. Defensively, Bernard Morgan and Eric Best led the Lions charge with five solo tackles each. As a team, Lincoln (PA) amassed 412 yards of total offense on 70 plays while holding Post to 221 yards of total offense in 53 plays. Lincoln also held advantages in first downs (23-12), possession time (36:49 to 22:59).

Emory & Henry 37 at Bluefield State 14
In one of the many weather-delayed games of the day, homestanding Bluefield State came up on the short end of the stick, dropping a 37-14 non-conference decision to visiting Emery & Henry. Emory & Henry started out strong, with a 71-yard touchdown pass to get on the board early and continued to dominate for the remainder of the contest. Jai’Que Hart was Bluefield State’s leader of the offensive side of the ball with a game-high 226 passing yards. The leading receivers for the Big Blue were Perry Wilder III and Khyon Smith with 70 and 51 yards respectively on 10 combined receptions. TJ Gunter and Jaylyn Norris contributed a team-high eight tackles each and Brett Brantley added seven tackles in the setback.

Tusculum 17 at Virginia State 21
After a two-hour lightning delay, the Trojans of Virginia State played host to the Tusculum Pioneers and started the game with a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and held on down the stretch to edge the visitors 21-17 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Neither team accumulated much on offense with Virginia State recording 234 yards of total offense while Tusculum accounted for 216 yards of total offense. Steve Williams completed 7-of-20 passes for 118 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked twice. Kimo Clarke carried the ball 20 times for a game-high 54 rushing yards and Tylique Ray paced the Trojans receivers with 54 yards. Willie Drew was Virginia State’s leading defensive player with eight tackles while teammate Tyrone Fisher added six tackles in the victory.

The Elizabeth City State football team earned a good win on a wet Saturday afternoon versus Saint Augustine’s in the 26
th Annual Down East Classic in Rocky Mount, NC. Zechariah Duckson-Adams finished the shutout with 179 rushing yards on 33 carries to lead the Vikings offensively. On the defensive side of the ball, ECSU was led by Tracey White Jr. with seven total tackles and Traveon Freshwater along with Jermain Smith accounted for a half dozen tackles each. As for Saint Augustine’s, Christopher Perkins threw for a game-high 93 passing yards, completing 8-of-23. Jesiah Davis was the leading Saint Augustine’s receiver with 38 receptions. Monte Williams was SAU’s leading tackler with a game-high 10 tackles.

Winston-Salem State 14 at Ohio Dominican 26
After scoring first, the Winston-Salem State Rams but fell 26-14 to the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. Daylin Lee paced the Rams offensively with 278 passing yards, completing 22-of-33, one touchdown and was intercepted once. Chad Turner and Cameron Cloud were WSSU’s top receivers with 76 and 71 reception yards respectively. Leading the Rams on defense were Justin Fleming (8 tackles), Trevor Willard (7 tackles) and the combo of Terell Chance and Octavis McLaurin with six tackles apiece.

Livingstone 15 at Catawba 55
Livingstone was no match on the road against cross-town foe Catawba, losing in a rout by a final score of 55-15 in the Blue Bears final non-conference game of the season. Livingstone managed just 274 yards of total offense compared to a whopping 590 for the Catawba Indians. Of Livingstone’s total offensive yards, 161 came by way of the pass and 113 on the ground. Kameron Howard was responsible for all the Blue Bears passing yards. Davontay Deloatch and Mathew Henry tallied 73 and 64 reception yards respectively. Livingstone’s defense was extremely busy on Saturday with Romell Smith leading the way with five total tackles.

Lenoir-Rhyne 24 at Fayetteville State 10
Fayetteville State dug a hole for themselves from the very beginning, falling behind 24-0 by halftime and couldn’t overcome the deficit to nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne. The Lenoir-Rhyne the Bears forced three first half turnovers (five total) and converted them into 21 points offensively to set the tone. Derrick Alston Jr. led all Broncos rushers with 61 yards and one touchdown in the contest, picking up 6.8 yards per carry. Joe Owens, Jr. also added 47 yards on the ground, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Tre' Goode reeled in two catches for 58 yards. Shi Gaskin led the Fayetteville State defensive effort, totaling four tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack. Bryan Brewington added 1.0 TFL and one sack in the loss.
