SALEM, VIRGINIA (March 25, 2023) – The top eight bowling teams took to the lanes for day one of the 2023 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Bowling Championship at Lee-Hi Lanes in Salem, Virginia. Day one of the 2023 CIAA Bowling Championship started with Individual play. The 2022 Rookie and Player of the year, Carrington Hayward from Livingstone College finished with the highest average of 191.00. Followed by the 2023 Rookie and Player of the Year Brooke Smith from Shaw University with an average of 186.75. Her teammate, Necarri Moore averaged 175.75. Fayetteville State would claim the fourth, fifth, and sixth places. Jayda Gignac finished with an average of 169.67, Cecilia Chafin averaged 167.50, and Denise Brown averaged 165.67.
Bracket Play
The opening round of the championship was met with a matchup between no. 1 Fayetteville State Broncos (FSU) verses. no. 8 Virginia State Trojans (VSU), no. 3. Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (JCSU) verses no. 6 Virginia Union University (VUU), no. 4 Elizabeth City State (ECSU) verses no. 5 Shaw Bears (SU), and no. 2 Bowie State Bulldogs (BSU) verses no. 7 Livingstone Blue Bears (LC).
ROUND 1
FSU went 4-0 against VSU to advance to the second round, while the Golden Bulls secured a 4-1 victory over VUU. The Bears of Shaw University collected a 4-1 victory over the Elizabeth City State Vikings, as the Bulldogs of Bowie State won against LC in a seven-game battle, 4-3.
Moving on to the round 2 winners bracket were FSU, JCSU, SU, and BSU while VSU, VUU, ECSU, and LC battle it out in the losers bracket in hopes of bowling another round.
UP NEXT
After an intense first day of the 2023 CIAA Bowling Championship, Fayetteville State, Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union, and Bowie State will advance to Day 2 of the championship. The competition will resume tomorrow, Sunday, March 26 at AMF LeeHi Lanes. Teams will hit the lanes at 9:20 a.m. to warm up and will battle round for round beginning at 9:50 a.m. in hopes of claiming the 2023 CIAA Bowling Championship Title.
