CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Saturday began with a two-way tie for first place in both the Northern and Southern Division of the CIAA Standings. Week Six delivered clarity atop the standings, giving two teams sole possession of first place in their respective divisions. Additionally, two teams may have reinserted themselves into championship contention and elsewhere, one player continues to stake his claim for the NCAA's Harlon Hill Trophy. Plus, one team earned its first victory in conference action.

Let's take a look at the week six results for all teams across the conference:

Elizabeth City State 0, Virginia Union 49         ECSU: 1-5 (1-3 CIAA)    VUU: 6-0 (4-0 CIAA)

After taking a 7-0 lead into the second quarter, the Panthers added three more touchdowns before halftime to leave little doubt that they would remain undefeated. Jada Byers had 29 carries for 205 yards in the game and scored twice by intermission. Jahkari Grant completed 9-of-13 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns as Virginia Union racked up 457 yards and averaged 6.6 yards per play. It was ECSU with the play of the day though. The Vikings' Zion Riddick returned a kickoff 91 yards, getting downed at the four-yard line. That 91-yard play is the longest of the season in the conference. The Panthers' defense held the Vikings' offense to 90 total yards of offense and allowed just one first-down conversion on 14 tries. Xzavier Hines had a game-high 11 total tackles for the Panthers and Isaac Anderson added 3.5 tackles for a loss. Traveon Freshwater and Tracey White Jr. each had a team-high 10 tackles for ECSU. White Jr. had a forced fumble and Juanya' Majette had an interception, nine tackles, and 1.5 stops for a loss.

Chowan 16, Lincoln (PA) 14        Chowan: 3-3 (3-1 CIAA)    LUPA: 2-3 (1-2 CIAA)                

Lincoln (PA) scored a touchdown to make it a two-point game with 8:11 remaining in the contest. On their final drive, the Lions drove all the way to the Hawks' 17-yard line before two Lincoln penalties forced a turnover-on-downs on 4th-and-17 at Chowan's 27-yard line. Meanwhile, the Hawks remain in contention for the Northern Division crown thanks to their stellar defense, which contributed six points of its own with a 73-yard fumble returned for a touchdown by Montre Moore. After allowing a touchdown on the opening drive, Chowan kept Lincoln off the scoreboard on the next 10 drives. The Lions' Amir Garrett rushed for a game-high 91 yards and Isaiah Freeman passed for 155 yards and two touchdowns while gaining 66 rushing yards. Freeman and the Lions scored the first touchdown of the game with a 14-yard pass to Drew Stephens, who finished with four catches and 76 yards. Nijere Peoples led the Hawks with 66 yards rushing and Jordan Bailey added 58 on the ground. Chowan's Jakob Streeter had a team-high eight tackles, three stops for a loss, and the forced fumble that led to the touchdown return. Raydarius Freeman had six tackles, including three for a loss for the Hawks. Eric Best (seven tackles) and Rontay Dunbar (five tackles and 1.5 for a loss) each had an interception for the Lions.

Saint Augustine's 0, Fayetteville State 54        SAU: 0-6 (0-4 CIAA)    FSU: 4-2 (3-1 CIAA)


At halftime, Fayetteville State led 37-0 en route to a season-high 54 points, shattering the previous high of 28. The Broncos are now in sole possession of first-place of the Northern Division. FSU's Demari Daniels, making just his second collegiate appearance, threw for 194 yards and three touchdowns on just five completions (seven attempts) and Barry Elliott converted his three receptions into 141 yards and three scores. FSU running backs Derrick Alston Jr. (99) and Ellijah Henry (70) established new season-highs in rushing yards while each scoring a touchdown. For St. Aug, Jamieson Alston led the team with seven solo tackles and two stops for a loss. The Falcons' best chance at scoring was in the first quarter when they drove to the Broncos' 15-yard line before a turnover-on-downs. The 12-play drive went 56 yards, highlighted by a 26-yard completion to Rashawn Faustine from Donovan Brewington.

Shaw 18, Johnson C. Smith 22        Shaw: 2-4 (2-2 CIAA)    JCSU: 2-3 (2-2 CIAA)


How fortunes change. Two weeks ago the Golden Bulls were 0-2 and at the bottom of the Southern Division. Saturday, with this win, Johnson C. Smith is now tied for second place with the tiebreaker over Shaw and only one-game behind first-place Fayetteville State. The Golden Bulls recovered from an early 13-0 deficit with quarterback Tyrell Jackson shaking off a first-quarter pick-six and finding Jaron Hull for the go-ahead touchdown with under seven minutes to play. Jackson led JCSU on a game-winning drive of 14 plays and 58 yards. From there, the defense stepped up by forcing a three-and-out, a four-and-out, and then keeping the Bears from crossing their own 40-yard line on the final drive. Jackson passed for 259 yards and the touchdown and Tyreik Leach had two rushing touchdowns. JCSU's Dataveus Robinson led all receivers with 84 yards receiving on four receptions. The Bears' Jatoine Fields had a game-high 50 yards rushing as Shaw totaled 133 yards on the ground. Shaw's Akeythio Carson and Joerail White each had eight tackles, a game-high. Carson had a forced fumble as well and Jay Boyd had a fumble recovery and the pick-six. JCSU's Chase Mitchell had six tackles, forced a fumble, and recorded an interception.

Bowie State 41, Virginia State 14        BSU: 4-2 (3-1 CIAA)    VSU: 4-2 (3-1 CIAA)

After a three-and-out on its first drive, Bowie State scored on its next four possessions (three TDs, one FG) to jump out to a 24-0 first-quarter lead, which proved to be insurmountable for the Trojans. Dion Golatt Jr. tossed two touchdowns in that first frame, a 45-yarder to Kwincy Hall and a 27-yarder to Keshane Hinckley. The Hinckley-Golatt Jr. combination returned for a 31-yard touchdown in the third quarter to grow the Bulldogs' lead to 41-7. Golatt Jr. finished with three touchdowns and 242 yards on 17-of-29 passing and he had 21 rushing yards. Hinckley finished with five catches for 75 yards and the two touchdowns. Bowie State's Larry Williams also two touchdowns (rushing). Jordan Davis and Kimo Clarke scored the two touchdowns for Virginia State. On defense, the Trojans' Tyrone Fisher had a game-high 11 tackles with nine solo stops and Kymon Pope had nine tackles and was credited with a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry. The Bulldogs were led by Raymond Boone and his team-high nine tackles and two pass deflections while Ellison Jordan added three tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

Winston-Salem State 17, Livingstone 20        WSSU: 0-5 (0-3 CIAA)    LC: 2-4 (1-3 CIAA)


Livingstone jumped out to a 14-0 first-half lead before the Rams came storming back with a 36-yard Asa Barnes touchdown. The Barnes touchdown from Jahmier Slade gave WSSU a 17-14 advantage with 3:15 left to play. The Blue Bears' Silas Cruise directed a game-winning drive of 10 plays and 62 yards, culminating in a two-yard touchdown pass to Lasirton Bryant. Livingstone defeated the Rams for the first time since 1998, snapping an 18-game losing streak. Livingstone's Matthew Henry had four catches for 103 yards and he had a 66-yard touchdown reception. For WSSU, Barnes rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown (two total) on 22 carries and JahTwan Strafford had 74 yards on 11 carries. Livingstone's Will Tims had 11 total tackles (seven solo), including 1.5 stops for a loss and Kevin Larkins Jr. had two interceptions and a forced fumble. The final defensive stop came from Christian Bostic when he sacked Slade on the final hail mary attempt. The Rams' Jasahn Rankin had a team-high seven tackles with a sack and an interception and Karron Jeter picked up two sacks.
