Former JCSU standout James Ewers to be inducted into Black Tennis Hall of Fame

CHARLOTTE, NC -  Johnson C. Smith University tennis alum Dr. James B. Ewers, Jr. '70, will be inducted in the Black Tennis Hall of Fame. The induction will take place the weekend of July 2-3, 2021, at the Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
 
During his days as a member of the JCSU tennis team, Ewers was All-Conference and holds the record of having won 34 consecutive singles matches. Included in this streak are wins over Purdue and Northwestern universities. Ewers is a CIAA Champion ('67, '68, '69), NAIA Champion ('68), and is a member of the JCSU Hall of Fame.
 
Ewers received a master's degree in education from Catholic University in Washington D.C., and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He did his post-doctoral studies at Harvard University where he was a 1996 graduate of the Management Development Program. 
 
Ewers is currently a member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Louisiana and sits on the Diversity Committee. He was appointed to the USTA Southern Schools & After Schools Committee in 2019. He is a life member of the NAACP and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
 
Ewers is married to Deborah L. Ewers. They have three adult children and six grandchildren.
