Roger Ray Free Throws Lifts Blue Bears over WSSU 83-82 2/2/2019 9:10:00 PM by Blue Bears Sports Information Department WINSTON-SALEM — The Livingstone College men's basketball team erased a 10-point deficit late in the second half but Roger Ray's two free throw with 5.9 seconds left the Blue Bears to win an 83-82 win over the Rams of Winston-Salem State in a steamy C.E. Gains Center on Saturday afternoon. LC looked to be in control when on the next Winston-Salem State possession, the Rams were whistled for a turning the ball back over to the Blue Bears when LC's Cameryn Carpenter layup, making the score 79-74 with 3:14 left, in the second half. Both teams traded jumpers bringing LC to within 81-78 with 2:23 remaining. Carpenter not your normal shooter for the Blue Bears, drilled a 3-pointer, tying the score at 81-81. As time is winding down trailing, 82-81, Ray, who was fouled by the Rams' with just 5.9 seconds left. Ray, made the first free throw, to tie the game as WSSU called a timeout. After the timeout both teams left their benches, to line up for the free throw, Ray made the second one, giving the Rams enough time for one shot. WSSU's Harrell had the open jumper but it hit the back of the rim, as the Rams fall to the Blue Bears. Ray, made 8-of-19 shots from the floor and 14-of-18 free throws for his second 33 points game of the season. Carpenter followed with 13 points in the LC scoring, his career high. Robert Crandell made 5-of-11 shots and 7-of-8 free throws for 17 points, leading the Rams in scoring. Livingstone made 48 percent of its shots from the field 27-of-56 while WSSU shot just 37 percent 22-of-59. LC shot 6-of-19, from behind the arch while the Rams were 5-of-21. The victory, keeps the Blue Bears atop the conference's Southern Division. With an overall record of 14-7, 7-5 in the CIAA and 5-1 in the division. The Rams fall to 9-10 and 4-7 in league games and 3-3 in the Southern Division.
