Saint Augustine's Men; Virginia State Women Crowned CIAA Indoor Champs

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 11) – Saint Augustine’s University captured its 22nd straight men’s crown and Virginia State won its second-ever women’s title at the CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Monday.
The Saint Augustine’s men won in convincing fashion, distancing itself from Virginia State on the final day at the JDL Fast Track. Trailing VSU by three points after the first day, SAU scored 160 points on Monday for a 194-111 victory. Virginia Union placed third with 61 points.

The Virginia State women held onto a 22-point first-day lead for their first championship since 2012. The Trojans scored 129 points to top Saint Augustine’s, which finished second with 110 points. Fayetteville State placed third with 94 points.

Saint Augustine’s was led by Jumonne Exeter, the CIAA Men’s Field MVP. Domenic Samuel of Claflin was the CIAA Men’s Track MVP.

Virginia State swept the women’s postseason honors. Kyla Frank was the CIAA Women’s Track MVP and Kenya Warner was the CIAA Women’s Field MVP.

The women’s winners on Monday were: Warner of Virginia State (Pentathlon), Shannon Kalawan of Saint Augustine’s (200 Dash, 400 Dash), Alicia St. Louis of Johnson C. Smith (Triple Jump), Jeia Gilliam of Virginia State (Shot Put), Ma’Kyia Gayden of Winston-Salem State (60 Dash), Frank of Virginia State (800 Run), Danielle Scantlebury of Saint Augustine’s (60 Hurdles), Nelly Kandie of Fayetteville State (3,000 Run) and the Saint Augustine’s 4x400 Relay Team.

The men’s winners on Monday were: Jahvante Marcelle of Virginia State (Heptathlon), Exeter (Triple Jump), Brandon Slade of Virginia State (Shot Put), Allen Blair of Virginia State (High Jump), Derick St. Jean of Claflin (400 Dash), Davion McKnight of Claflin (60 Dash), Shaquille Dill of Saint Augustine’s (800 Run), Jeremiah Bridges of Saint Augustine’s (60 Hurdles), Davon Carroll of Bowie State (200 Dash), Baron Freeman of Saint Augustine’s (5000 Run) and the Saint Augustine’s 4x400 Relay Team.

The CIAA also named the track and field athletes of the year during the awards ceremony after the conclusion of the championship meet. Shannon Kalawan of Saint Augustine’s was selected women’s track athlete of the year and Warner of Virginia State was chosen women’s field athlete of the year. Dontarian Evans of Saint Augustine’s was named men’s track athlete of the year and Jeremiah Bridges of Saint Augustine’s was picked men’s field athlete of the year.

The track and field athletes of the year were nominated by the league’s coaches and voted on by the coaches and the CIAA’s sports information directors.
