Virginia State Teams In Lead After Day 1 of the CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Feb. 10) – Virginia State took the first-day men’s and women’s lead in the 2019 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at JDL Fast Track on Sunday.

The Trojans hold a tight lead over Virginia Union and Saint Augustine’s in the men’s division. They are atop the leaderboard with 37 points followed by Virginia Union and Saint Augustine’s with 34 points each.

In the women’s division, the Trojans hold a sizable lead over their opponents. They are ahead with 51 points followed by Saint Augustine’s with 29 points and Fayetteville State with 27 points.

Several student-athletes claimed CIAA individual and relay titles on Sunday. Among the men, Domenic Samuel of Claflin won the one mile run in 4:31.04 and Alphonso Lawrence of Virginia Union captured the pole vault with a height of 3.55m. Tavian Stewart of Johnson C. Smith placed first in the long jump (7.30m) and Virginia Union took home the 4000 Distance Medley Relay in 10:53.26. Members of the championship-winning relay squad are Enos Rotich, Jordan Jones, Charles Whitehead-Tillery and Micah Kipruto.

In the women’s events, Kyla Frank of Virginia State was victorious in the one mile run in 5:25.69 and Jenele Terry of Winston-Salem State was the winner in the long jump with a mark of 5.55m. Shannon Kalawan of Saint Augustine’s claimed victory in the high jump in 1.58m and Virginia State placed first in the 4000 Distance Medley Relay in 13:11.45. Members of the championship-winning relay unit are Kyla Frank, Deriel Green, Jada Harris and Kyera Frank.
