Chowan Use Third Quarter Run To Take Down Trojans

PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Women's Basketball team used a strong third quarter to take control of the CIAA Northern Division contest against Virginia State on Wednesday evening on the road.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Jada Lee led the Hawks with a double-double recording 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Lee tallied six assists.  Danielle Weldon added 13 points.

Mariah Coker chipped in with nine points, while Brianna Copeland and Joanne Williams added eight points each.

Chowan outscored Virginia State 20-7 in the third quarter after trailing 28-26 at the half.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Virginia State knocked down two three-pointers to lead 6-0 early.  Brianna Copeland ended the run with an old-fashioned three-point play.  Danielle Weldon converted a layup and Mariah Coker knocked down a triple to trim the deficit to 10-8.

Danielle Weldon posted three points before VSU pushed the lead on a three-pointer.  Mariah Coker converted from the stripe for a pair to head into the second quarter trailing 16-13.

Second Quarter:

Joanne Williams scored early in the quarter before the Trojans went on a 7-0 run to lead 23-15.  Olivia Gaither hit a free throw and Jahkeria Bagby tallied a layup in transition off a Jada Lee's assist.  Danielle Weldon added to the run to close the gap to 23-20.

Jada Lee added a layup and Joanne Williams posted back-to-back buckets to end the half to trail 28-26 at the intermission.

Third Quarter:

Chowan raced out of the locker room on an 11-1 run to lead 37-29.  Sydnee Neal started the run with a layup along with a Jada Lee bucket.  Olivia Gaither knocked down a triple before Danielle Weldon and Mariah Coker posted a bucket.

After a Jada Lee and Danielle Weldon bucket, the Hawks saw their lead increase to double-digits, 41-31.  Olivia Gaither connected from deep again and Danielle Weldon posted a pair from the charity stripe to give the Hawks a 46-35 advantage at the end of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter:

After an early run by the Trojans, Chowan countered with a 7-0 run to lead 53-38.  Jada Lee and Joanne Williams added jumpers while Brianna Copeland connected from deep during the stretch.

VSU closed the gap to 55-47 with 2:36 remaining in the contest but the Hawks would force the Trojans to foul as Mariah Coker and Brianna Copeland iced the contest at the stripe for the win.

Chowan hosts Bowie State in CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday, January 26.  Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
