MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University basketball teams split contests in a doubleheader inside of the Helms Center on Saturday afternoon.

Naterria Luster led all scorers with 18 points, while Jalyn Brown and Asia Deal both scored in double figures for the Vikings. Defensively, ECSU was sterling as they held the Hawks to just 31 percent scoring from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. ECSU connected on 75 percent of their free throws and registered 12 steals on the afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Half
 
The Vikings started off the game with stout defense and looked to the offensive prowess of senior Jalyn Brown who poured in 14 first half points. The Hawks were never able to get to within six points in the second quarter as the Vikings would take a ten-point lead into the halftime break.
 
Second Half
 
Chowan came out in the third quarter and outscored the Vikings by five in the first five minutes of the third quarter. However, it was a three pointer by DeNayia Holmes that extended the Viking lead out to eight with 4:52 left in the third quarter. The Vikings would extend their lead out to 13 with 3:40 left in the third before the Hawks would trim the lead down to 11 heading into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Vikings kept pace and never allowed the Hawks to get to within single digits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
First Half
 
For the first ten minutes, ECSU and Chowan would trade blows with neither team being able to get a true handle on the contest. ECSU would lead 24-23 with 5:46 remaining before going on a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to give ECSU their largest lead of the first have at eight. Chowan would chip away at the lead and would look to leading scorer Timothy Bing who would score 6 points over the last 90 seconds to bring the Hawks to within four.
 
Second Half
 
Chowan came out of the halftime break and would go on a quick 5-0 run to erase the Viking halftime lead. Both teams would trade the lead back and forth with neither team being able to garner more than a five-point lead over the other. After a Corey Mendez lay-up with 7:54 left to go in the second half to bring the Vikings to within three at 53-50, both teams would endure a 2:30 minute scoring drought before Demetrius Sanders would hit a lay-up with 5:15 left in the game to push the Chowan lead to five. Chowan would buckle down defensively and force ECSU into three turnovers and would convert those to six points to push their lead to nine with 2:50 left in the second half. That nine-point margin would be the final margin as Chowan would win 64-55.

ECSU will continue their road swing by heading to Pennsylvania to challenge Lincoln University in a CIAA North Division matchup on Wednesday evening.
