No. 8 Trojans Fall to the Rams of Winston-Salem State University, 69-49

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (January 10, 2019)– Despite a hard-fought game the Virginia State University women's basketball team (7-5, 1-2 CIAA) suffered a tough 49-69 loss to the Rams of Winston-Salem State University tonight at the C.E. Gaines Center. 
 
Virginia State opened the contest outscoring the Rams 15-14 after one quarter. Winston-Salem State continued to put points on the board outscoring the Trojans in the second, 15-12, as Virginia State trailed 29-27 at the half. The Rams secured a 49-39 advantage after three periods and rolled to a 69-49 victory over Virginia State.  The Trojans was led by senior forward Chrisanna Green recording her tenth double-double of the season with 15 points and 16 rebounds.  

Green scored 15 points in 37 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was 6-of-14 from the floor and finished with 16 rebounds. Yazmen Hannah recorded 13 points and four rebounds.
 
Amaya Tucker led the Rams in double figures with contributing 20 total points. Shields contributed 17 points.
 
How It Happened
Virginia State opened the game with a 15-14 lead over Winston-Salem State to close out the first quarter. Winston-Salem State continued to put points on the board outscoring the Trojans in the second, 15-12, as Virginia State trailed 29-27 at the half. 
 
Taylor Hayes secured the opening basket to start the third quarter to tie the game 29 all. Hannah added one from the free throw line to give the Trojans a 37-34 advantage with 4:07 left in the quarter. Virginia State then added its final basket to cut WSSU's lead 49-39 with just 00:50 seconds to play to end the period.  
 
Winston-Salem State continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving them a 69-49 victory. Tajah Clark collected a basket to close out the scoring for the Trojans.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Virginia  State was 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) shooting and 8-of-10 (80 percent) from the charity stripe
> Winston-Salem State University shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the floor and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free-throw line
> Virginia State finished with seven points off WSSU turnovers and eight second-chance points
> WSSU tallied 22 points off VSU turnovers and 15 second-chance points

The Trojans will travel to Salisbury, NC to face the Blue Bears of Livingstone College on Saturday, January 12th. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
