Trojans Secure 72-65 Victory Over the University of Mount Olive

ETTRICK, Va. (December 19, 2018) -- The Virginia State University men's basketball team defeated the Trojans of the University of Mount Olive, 72-65, tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
 
Jahmere Howze led the way for the Trojans (8-3) with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. Cedric Wiggins also contributed 14 total points, six rebounds and one assist.  
 
Cyonte Melvin finished the contest with 11 points and four total rebounds. Jalen Jackson added 10 points to round out VSU's double-digit scorers.
 
The University of Mount Olive were led by Jamaal Martin, who tallied 21 points and two rebounds in the contest, including 13 points in the second half to help the University of Mount Olive attempt to stay within striking distance.
 
VSU, scoring the opening basket of the game, to go on a 2-0 run in the opening minutes to set the tone for the first half of the contest by building a 33-25 lead going into halftime. The University of Mount Olive tried to rally, but could never cut the VSU Trojans lead in the opening frame.
 
The VSU Trojans' continued to bring the same energy into the second half, as they continued to extend their lead. Cyonte Melvin contributed 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the floor. VSU's second leading scorer Cedric Wiggins secured 10 points and two total rebounds in the half.
 
Virginia State added 41points to close out the contest with an 72-65 victory.
 
Virginia State finished the contest shooting 46.8 (22-47) percent from the field, 33.3 (7-21) from the arc and 70 (21-30) percent from the free throw line.
 
CLOSING OUT WITH THE FREEBIES: After attempting only six free throws in the first half, the Trojans of VSU made it to the charity stripe 15 times in the second period, converting on 83.3 percent (15-18) of those trips.
 
UP NEXT: After tonight's win, VSU will close out the year with a contest against Barton College on December 31st. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
