ECSU Men's Basketball Falls on the Road at 18th Ranked USC Aiken 11/25/2018 9:18:00 PM by Vikings Sports Information Department AIKEN, S.C. – Elizabeth City State University junior forward John Maynor led the Viking offensive attack by pouring in a season-high 24 points but the Viking rally fell short, 83-75, at the University of South Carolina Aiken on Sunday afternoon. (Convocation Center) INSIDE THE BOXSCORE John Maynor's 24-point outing was the result of a hot shooting night from the floor as the junior shot 6-of-9 from the field and 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Shyheid Petteway and Aujameq Daniels also scored in double figures for the Vikings. Tyjhai Byers was one point away from a double-double outing as the junior center notched 14 rebounds, seven offensive and seven defensive boards. The Vikings continued shooting well from the free throw line as the team combined to shoot 22-of-24 from the line for a 92 percent mark. ECSU also connected on nine three pointers for the afternoon. USC Aiken was paced by senior guard Ty'lik Evans who scored 24 points for the Pacers. HOW IT HAPPENED First Half: The Vikings started the contest on an 11-5 run behind a three-point basket by Shyheid Petteway and a three from John Maynor. However, USC Aiken would counter with a 14-0 run over a four-minute time span to take a 19-11 lead. The Pacers lead would balloon to as many as 12 before the Vikings chipped away at the advantage, to bring the halftime score to 42-39, behind a great free throw shooting effort from John Maynor and Justin Faison. Second Half: Both teams came out in the second half cold as the first four minutes of the second stanza generated three points all from USC Aiken. The Vikings and Pacers would go back and forth over the next ten minutes with the Pacers lead never expanding past ten points but the Vikings never being able to close to within six. ECSU would close to gap to five off of a layup from Shyheid Petteway at the 7:19 mark of the second half. USC Aiken would then go on a quick 7-0 run to put additional distance between the two teams. The Vikings would outscore the Pacers 12-7 over the last two minutes of play to bring the final margin to eight, 83-75. UP NEXT Elizabeth City State will finish up their road swing with a trip to Murfreesboro, N.C. to face off against conference rival Chowan University in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, November 28th.
