VUU Defeats Host Eckerd 70-64
Virginia Union University's Demarius Pitts scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Panthers to a 70-64 upset over previously unbeaten host Eckerd College on the first day of the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 23, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Eckerd had been averaging over 80 points a game this season, but VUU shut down the Tritons, holding Eckerd to 37.5 percent shooting.
"This was a great win tonight," said VUU Head Coach
Jay Butler. "I thought defensively we were fantastic, holding an Eckerd team that was averaging almost 81 points a game to just 64 points."
Virginia Union's Will Jenkins scored 14 points while teammate Deandre Thomas added 10 points.
"Will Jenkins and Deandre Thomas stepped up tonight," said Butler. "They made plays throughout the game."
Pitts and Thomas led the Panthers on the boards with six rebounds apiece.
The win raised VUU's record to 2-2 while Eckerd fell to 4-1.
The Panthers will meet the University of Tampa on the second day of the Eckerd Thanksgiving Classic at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
