2018 CIAA Football Report Week #8 & Championship Scenarios
2018 CIAA Football Report
Week #8
CHAMPIONSHIP SCENARIOS
Two CIAA Football Teams Ranked in NCAA Super Region 2
Two weeks remain in the 2018 CIAA Football regular season and the contenders for the November 10th championship have begun to separate from the standings.
Week #8 featured a pivotal game in the CIAA’s Northern Division with the Bulldogs of Bowie State University defeating the Panthers of Virginia Union University, 27-13. With the victory the Bulldogs marked a 3-1 conference record, tying with Virginia Union and Virginia State University. If the season finishes with a tie between Bowie State and either Virginia team, the Bulldogs will take the division crown due to the head-to-head tiebreaker criteria. In order for this storyline to unfold for the Bulldogs, the team will need to continue their winning streak through the next two weeks versus Lincoln (PA) University (10/27) and Elizabeth City State University (11/3).
Fayetteville State University extended their perfect conference record with a 31-28 victory over Saint Augustine’s University.. The Broncos are now 4-0 in the South with Winston-Salem State University following close behind at 3-1. Despite their untarnished record, FSU is not yet in the clear. Next up, Fayetteville State will host Livingstone College and then Winston-Salem State. This means that if the Broncos defeat the Blue Bears and the Rams can beat Shaw University this weekend (10/27), the fate of the Southern Division will be determined in Week #10’s showdown between the Broncos and Rams. In this scenario the Broncos would enter the final week of competition 5-0 and the Rams 4-1. A victory for the Broncos would result in a clear clinch of the Southern Division, yet a loss would result in a 5-1 tie between FSU and WSSU. The tie would be awarded to the Rams of Winston-Salem due to the head-to-head criteria.
The 2018 CIAA Football Championship will be hosted in Salem, Virginia on Saturday, November 10, featuring the Northern and Southern Division Champions. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets at TicketMaster.com.
2018 CIAA Conference Championship Game Criteria
- A six (6) game conference schedule is required for championship consideration; which includes five (5) divisional games.
- The conference champion will be determined in a one-game playoff between the Northern and Southern Division winners.
- The Northern and Southern Division winners will be determined by the highest winning percentage of conference games won based on the six game conference schedule.
- In case of a tie between divisional teams, the winner shall be determined as follows:
- Head-to-Head Competition
- Head-to Head Point Differential
- Divisional Winning Percentage
- Results vs. Common Conference Opponents
- Coin Toss
For the week ending October 21, 2018.
