CIAA Recognized at NCAA National Convention

Indianapolis, IN - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) received two awards during the NCAA's annual convention, hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana. The conference was recognized for its effort in supporting diversity and inclusion and the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Black College Football.

The CIAA received the NCAA/MOAA Award of Excellence for Diversity and Inclusion Honorable Mention for its continuous outreach within the conference's communities and the actions taken during the passing of House Bill 2 in North Carolina. As a direct result, the CIAA hired Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, Nevin Caple. She continues to work with the conference to host student-athlete events around gender equity and inclusion as well as mental health awareness and connecting campus communities. Additionally, Caple's outreach has extended to in-depth work on these topics on several CIAA campuses.

The CIAA also received Runner-Up recognition for its season-long celebration of the 125th Anniversary of Black College Football, which began with founding members Livingstone College and Johnson C. Smith University (then Biddle University), with the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence. The campaign highlighted consequential moments in CIAA football history from former and current member institutions, records, statistics, and shared the stories of CIAA student-athletes who excelled both on and off the field. The conference also celebrated the occassion with a commemorative logo and national promotions which culminated with educational sessions, community engagement, and recognition of Football Legends of the CIAA during the 2017 Football Championship.
