In 1978, he led his team to CIAA Championships in both sports. As a wrestler, he posted a career-long undefeated record within the CIAA during both the regular seasons and tournaments. His outstanding performances earned him All-NAIA honors in 1975, 1976, 1977, and 1978. He received the CIAA Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 1976, 1977, and 1978. In addition, he was awarded the CIAA Chase Postgraduate scholarship in 1978. Sherard is a member of the Winston-Salem State University Hall of Fame.
