Dr. Walter Lovett, Sr. has had an impressive career on and off the football field. His football coaching career began at Virginia State University as an assistant coach from 1964-1969. In 1970, he became the head coach, and after three years he accepted the head coach position at Hampton University, (formerly Hampton Institute), and is here that he achieved many accolades. In 1976, the Pirates became the only undefeated collegiate team in the state. In that same year, the Pirates’ football team achieved the most wins for a Hampton University football team since 1958. Lovett would later become Athletic Director of Hampton University. As a coach and administrator, Lovett received numerous honors including, CIAA Coach of the Year (1970), NAIA Coach of the Year (1971 and 1972), and CIAA Championships (1970 and 1972).
