Roanoke, VA (October 25, 2017) - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cross Country Championships are more than running for the Virginia Union University Panthers and Winston-Salem State University Rams.
The Panthers and Rams took a break from their pre-championship warmup to visit the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Virginia, lending a helping hand in the community. All Boys and Girls Clubs are based on youth development strategies, providing a safe environment and encouraging staff to assist in the students' personal growth.
Over the course of two hours, both CIAA programs tutored students in various subjects including math, science, spelling, and reading. The student-athletes participated in fun activities with the youth students during their recess.
#CIAASupports strives to give back to youth and communities surrounding its institutions and championship sites. Community outreach is one of the conference's three main pillars: Community, Leadership, Tradition.
The CIAA is set to host its 2017 CIAA Women’s and Men’s Cross Country Championships at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County, Virginia on Thursday, October 26, 2017. This year’s event will kick off with the men’s 8k race at 10:00 a.m. with the women’s 5k to follow at 11:00 a.m. ET.
