A Highly Anticipated Season: VSU Releases Cross Country Schedule

by Trojans Sports Information Department

Ettrick, VA - The Virginia State University Trojans are entering a highly anticipated season! Pacing the Trojans, under the leadership of head coach Wilbert Johnson, are the men's and women's cross country teams. Last season, the men kicked off VSU's winning trend by securing the 2017 CIAA Championship Title. The release of 2018 VSU Cross Country Schedule marks less than 8 weeks until the opening meet.

On September 1, the Trojans will take to the course at the Spider Alumni Open, hosted by the University of Richmond. On September 7 and September 21, numerous teams will be welcomed to the Land of Troy as the Trojans host the VSU Fall Opener and the VSU Invite. Taking their speed to North Carolina, VSU will compete in the HBCU Cross Country Challenge on October 6 in Cary, NC and the ECU Pirate Invitational, hosted by East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, on October 12. On October 25, the Trojans, to include the reigning Men's Cross Country Champs, will travel to Salem, VA for the 2018 CIAA Championship.

Entering his second cross country season with VSU, Coach Johnson looks to "roll with the pressure" of leading his teams to the winner's platform.

"On the men's side, we are looking for standout Tyreece Huff, the 2017 CIAA Runner of the Year, to do the same thing that he did last year but looking for him to have better times," said Coach Johnson.

The Trojans are expecting double trouble on the women's side with last season's standout Kyla Frank and the addition of her twin sister Kyera Frank. "I can't tell you who will take the lead the team between the sisters," said Coach Johnson.

After coming off of a success season, Coach Johnson knows that all eyes will be on the Trojans for the 2018 season. "When you win a championship, it is always pressure to maintain and get another one, but I can always roll with the pressure."
