Saint Augustine's, Virginia State Claim CIAA Cross Country Titles

CARY, NC - Virginia State won the men's championship and tied Saint Augustine's for the women's title Thursday (Oct. 23) at the 2008 CIAA Cross Country Championships at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Johnny Shuping of Saint Augustine's captured the men's 8K individual title with a time of 24:23.4, and Jenna Arnold of Virginia State won the women's 5K individual championship with a time of 19:59.9.
In the women's race, Saint Augustine's and Virginia State both scored 39 points and Shaw finished third with 103 points. This is the second consecutive season that Saint Augustine's has either won or shared the women's title. Saint Augustine's has won 16 CIAA women's championships overall while Virginia State captured its first women's championship in school history.
The women's champion was declared a tie according to the NCAA Rulebook which states that ties in team scoring shall not be broken except for advancement to the championship finals which is referring to the NCAA Regionals, the qualifying round to the NCAA Championships.
In the men's race, Virginia State scored 42 points to top Bowie State, which placed second with 58 while Shaw finished third with 91 points. This is the second title in school history for Virginia State, which won the men's championship in 2007.
The All-CIAA teams, which consist of the top 10 finishers in each race, were announced during the awards ceremony. The All-CIAA women runners were Allukeyshia Guy of Saint Paul's, Kyra Mobley of Saint Augustine's, Shanise Lewis of Virginia State, Racquel Daley of Saint Augustine's, Shamika Patton of Bowie State, Sierra Clayton of Virginia State, Barbara Pierre of Saint Augustine's, Winnie Chepchumba of Livingstone, Sharona Brown of Saint Augustine's and Arnold of Virginia State.
The All-CIAA men's runners were Joseph Philpot of Bowie State, Arthur Lee of Saint Augustine's, Brandon Turner of Virginia State, Craig Perkins of Shaw, Kenny Britt of Shaw, Dwayne Townsend of Virginia State, Timothy Davidson of Virginia State, Daryl Sanders of Bowie State, Geoffrey Langat of Virginia Union and Shuping of Saint Augustine's.
