Saint Augustine's, NCCU claim CIAA Cross Country Titles
October 19, 2006
CARY, NC – The 2006 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Cross Country Championships were a repeat of last year as far as team results as Saint Augustine’s College captured the men’s title and North Carolina Central took home the women’s crown Thursday (October 19, 2006) at SAS Soccer Complex.
The individual results were different, though. Geofray Langat of Virginia Union was the individual winner in the men’s 8K race, and Ashley Cooke of North Carolina won the individual title in the women’s 5K race. Langat won the men’s race in a time of 25:17.77 and Cooke won the women’s event in a time of 19:28.68.
In the men’s race, Saint Augustine’s College captured places second through fifth to claim its 21st CIAA championship overall. Issreal Jaimes finished second, Ken Samoei was third, Edgar Bermudez was fourth and Omar Wiggan placed fifth for the Falcons.
“The guys stepped up,” said George Williams, Saint Augustine’s College legendary coach. “They should do well in the regionals.”
The Falcons’ men scored 24 points followed by Virginia State which finished second with 77 points. Shaw was third with 98 points followed by North Carolina Central with 105, Virginia Union with 120, Bowie State with 145, St. Paul’s with 191, Livingstone with 211, Elizabeth City State with 251, Fayetteville State with 255 and Johnson C. Smith with 307.
In the women’s race, Cooke led a contingent of N.C. Central runners, who claimed five of the top six spots. Aisha Brown was second, Yolanda Barber was third, Latanya Lesine finished fifth and Erinn Brooks was sixth for the Lady Eagles. Barber was last year’s CIAA women’s individual champion.
Erica Young of Saint Augustine’s College finished fourth to prevent the Lady Eagles from sweeping the first five spots.
“I thought we had a chance to get the first five places but I am pleased with getting five of the first six places,” NCCU coach Michael Lawson said. “The ladies worked hard. They wanted to repeat.”
The Lady Eagles scored 17 points followed by second-place Saint Augustine’s College with 54 points. Virginia State scored 96 points, Shaw scored 126, Bowie State scored 130, Livingstone scored 201, Fayetteville State scored 203, Johnson C. Smith scored 219, Elizabeth City State scored 220 and St. Paul’s scored 224.
