Hawks Volleyball Falls To Barton

Wilson, NC – The Chowan Volleyball team fell to Barton in a non-conference match on the road Wednesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Courtney O'Keefe led the Hawks with 10 kills.  Brittany Tschida notched a hitting percentage of .545 with six kills and no errors.  Makayla Castro tallied seven kills and one error.

Bailey Zavala recorded 17 digs while Karisa Patterson pushed up 26 assists.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Set: Chowan 18, Barton 25

The Hawks and Bulldogs swapped points to open the set with Barton taking an early lead at 7-5.  Makayla CastroCourtney O'Keefe and Milica Vejnovic tallied kills during the rally.

A kill by Makayla Castro would even the match at 7-all.  Both teams would swap points until the middle portion of the set.

Barton would take the lead at 14-13 and push the lead to 18-14 forcing a Chowan timeout.

Makayla Castro cut the deficit to 22-17 after a kill but the Bulldogs would finish off the set 25-18.

 

2nd Set: Chowan 24, Barton 26

Barton opened the second set with a 6-2 advantage with Courtney O'Keefe registering the only kill for the Hawks.

Two kills by Courtney O'Keefe and a service ace cut the deficit to 12-10.  The Bulldogs would push their lead to 14-10 but a kill by Kayla Gates and Brittany Tschida cut the deficit to 14-13.

Courtney O'KeefeMakayla Castro, and Kayla Gates tallied kills to knot the match at 19-all.

The Hawks would take the lead at 21-19 after a Makayla Castro kill forcing a Bulldog timeout.

Chowan was one point away from taking the second set after Courtney O'Keefe notched a kill.  Barton rallied with four straight points on three Hawks' errors to take the set, 26-24.

 

3rd Set: Chowan 20, Barton 25

Back-to-back kills by Brittany Tschida continued to keep the match knotted up in the early portion of the set.

Karisa Patterson gave the Hawks a 9-7 lead after a kill but back-to-back Bulldog kills tied the set back up at 9-all.

A small rally by the Hawks on kills by Kayla GatesCourtney O'Keefe and Brittany Tschida handed the advantage back to the Hawks at 16-14.

The Hawks held on to their slight lead, 20-18, until three straight Bulldog points handed the lead back to Barton and forcing a timeout.

Out of the timeout, Barton would rattle off the final four points to win the set and match.

The Hawks return home to face Elizabeth City in a CIAA Northern Division match on Thursday, October 12.  First serve is at 6pm.
