Banner Elk, NC – Arlicia Ortiz (Spanaway, WA) had another one of her stellar performances as Fayetteville State University (2-4 overall) put down Lees-McRae 3-0 in volleyball action. The Broncos improved to 2-4 overall with sweeping wins of 25-21, 25-21, and 25-20.
The first set began as a competitive back-and-forth with nine score ties until it reached 20-all. Ortiz set up Nia Bell (Elizabeth City, NC) for a kill and the Broncos for a 4-0 run for a set match. Ortiz and Chynna Hunt (Charleston, SC) also put down kills for the 24-21 lead. A service error by the Bobcats (0-5 overall) ended the set in favor of the Broncos.
The second set began in the same fashion as the first with five (5) score ties until the Broncos went on a 7-2 run for a 17-12 lead. The Bobcats would climb within three (3), trailing 23-20, before an FSU timeout would resettle the Broncos and secure the set with another 25-21 win.
Set No. 3 would continue to play out as the previous two. With a 22-20 lead, utility player Chynna Hunt placed a well-set kill by Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) for a 23-20 score. After a Bobcats attack error, Hunt blocked a Caitlyn Smirne attack for the sweep.
Ortiz led FSU with 11 kills, 19 attacks, 13 digs and 1 assisted block. Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) finished with seven (7) kills while McKinnie provided 16 assists.
