CALIFORNIA, PA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (20-10)
ended a great 2012 season with a 5-0 loss to the top-seeded host
California (Pa.) Vulcans (22-5), Saturday afternoon in the opening
round of the 2012 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
The Lady Rams gave it their all, but the team could not get the
points they needed against the eighth-ranked team in the
nation.
The Lady Rams opened the day with some impressive performances in
doubles play, falling 8-1, 8-5, and 8-1. The #2 duo of juniors
Sloane Holmes and Kayla Carter had the best outing in doubles play
with an 8-5 effort at the #2 doubles position. With the three
doubles losses, the Lady Rams needed five singles wins in order to
advance in the tournament. The team would not get them, however as
a pair of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 losses ended the day for the
team.
Though the loss ends the season for the Lady Rams, it does not
overshadow another great season for the team that finished as
runners-up for the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Championship and the 2012 CIAA Southern Division
Championship. Over the past two seasons, the Lady Rams tennis team
has posted a 47-12 record with just two CIAA losses.
