Chowan WBB Downs Defending League Champ, JCSU

Murfreesboro, NC – The Chowan Women's Basketball team rebounded with a 68-54 victory over defending CIAA Champions, Johnson C. Smith, in CIAA Cross-Division action on Monday.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Chantel Roberts led the charge for the Hawks with a team-high 25 points going 5-9 from deep.  Roberts tallied eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Danielle Weldon joined Chantel Roberts in double-figures with 11 points.  Mariah Coker notched nine points and seven assists.

Joanne Williams hauled in nine rebounds.  Dhyamond Crenshaw chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, three blocks and four steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

Chowan and Johnson C. Smith traded baskets for the opening stanza of the game as the Hawks held a slight 18-15 advantage.

Mariah Coker opened the contest knocking down a trey.  Chantel Roberts hit a jumper to lead 5-2.

A quick 4-0 run by the Golden Bulls allowed JCSU to lead 6-5 and again at 8-7.  Jada Lee knocked down a triple to hand the lead back to the Hawks, 10-8, and never gave it back.

JCSU would tie the contest at 12-all with just over a minute to play but Chantel Roberts gave the Hawks space with back-to-back treys before JCSU answered to close the opening quarter 18-15.

Second Quarter:

The second quarter slowed down as the Hawks outscored the Golden Bulls 11-10.  JCSU trimmed the deficit to one on three separate occasions in the frame.  Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jordan Pettway pushed the lead to 22-17.

JCSU would go on a 6-2 run to trim the lead to 24-23.  Jada Lee gave the Hawks some space with a jumper before the lead shrunk to one, 26-25 with 3:17 to play in the half.

Jordan Pettway knocked down a triple on the next possession as neither team scored in the final three minutes of the half.

Chowan led 29-25 at the break.

Third Quarter:

Chowan opened the half on a 7-1 run to go up by double-figures, 36-26.  Chantel Roberts sparked the run with a layup and a jumper.  Mariah Coker knocked down a three to cap off the run.

The Hawks' defense would hold the Golden Bulls without a field goal for the first 8:06 of the quarter allowing only four points from the charity stripe.  Mariah Coker and Chantel Roberts connected from behind the arc to build the lead to 13, 42-29.

Chowan would lead 46-34 heading to the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

Chowan would maintain their double-digit lead as Danielle Weldon started the quarter with a pair from the stripe.  Jada Lee knocked down a three to pick up the first basket of the quarter for the Hawks.  Dhyamond Crenshaw followed with a jumper.

Back-to-back triples by Chantel Roberts saw the lead grow to 19, 61-42, midway through the quarter.

Johnson C. Smith produced 12 points over the final 4:10 grabbing 10 points from the charity stripe.  The Hawks scored seven during the final session but held off any rally by the Golden Bulls.

UP NEXT

Chowan hosts Bowie State on February 17 in CIAA Northern Division action.  Bowie State defeated the Hawks on January 24.  Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm.
