Smith Helps Hold Off Johnson C. Smith, 74-67

Ettrick, VA (January 10, 2018)—The Virginia State University women's basketball team secured a 74-67 victory over the visiting Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center. With the victory the Trojans improves to 15-0 overall record, 5-0 in the CIAA, to remain undefeated, while JCSU move to a 10-5 overall record, 2-2 in the CIAA.

Alexis Smith (Lusby, MD) led the way for the Trojans with 22 points on 7-of-12 shots from the floor. Smith also contributed five total rebounds, seven assists, and one steals.  
  
Virginia State shot 37 percent from the field, 33 percent from behind the arc and 60 perfect from the free throw line. VSU also had three players to score in double figures. Junior forward Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, NY) was VSU's second-leading scorer finishing the contest with a double-double performance contributing 17 points and 15 rebounds, while guard Mia Fitts (Richmond, VA) contributed 13 points and three steals. Keyana Brown (Williamsburg, VA) secured 12 points and six rebounds.

Johnson C. Smith jumped to a quick 6-2 lead after a pair of Jasmine Carter's baskets along with a layup from Kendall Adams at the 8:39 mark. The Trojans then answered by tying the game six all at the 7:41 mark on a layup by Mia Fitts. With 6:27 left in the quarter the Trojans took their first lead of the game 9-8 on a 3-pointer by Alexis Smith.  Virginia State then opened up a 19-10 lead to close out the first quarter.
 
In the second stanza, Virginia State built on their lead, 31-19, by the 5:32 mark, as they continued to make plays on the court.  A 10-1 run by the Trojans helped them to continue to add points to the board for the remainder of the half while tallying 10 points to take an extended advantage into the break, 41-21.
 
With 5:26 to go in the third, a layup by Chrisanna Green put Virginia State up, 45-32. The Golden Bulls continued to rally by netting 18 points in the remaining minutes of the quarter, cutting Virginia State's lead to 56-50, heading into the final period.
 
The Golden Bulls started the final quarter with adding two points off of free throws making it a one point game. A layup by Asha Jordan gave the Golden Bulls their first lead of the quarter. With 7:28 left in the contest, VSU secured a 58-57 lead on a layup by Keyana Brown. JCSU then took a 61-60 lead with 4:02 left on the clock. Two free throws by Mia Fitts gave the Trojans a 62-61 edge. The teams then swapped the lead five times over the next minute of play until the Golden Bulls secured a layup, tying the game at 67-67 with 1:01 on the clock.

A layup by Chrisanna Green gave the Trojans the lead for good at 69-67. VSU then held JCSU scoreless the rest of the way and hit 5-of-6 free throws in the closing seconds to take the 74-67 win.

Jasmine Carter led all JCSU scorers and secured a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Kendall Adams finished with 14 points and Monique Hall had 10 points in the loss, which drops the Golden Bulls to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in CIAA play.
 
Up Next: Virginia State will travel to face I-95 rival Virginia Union University State University on Saturday, January 13. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
