RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior forward LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) scored a career-high 37 points and set a personal-best five made 3-pointers, but the Shaw University women's basketball team fell to Lenoir-Rhyne University, 82-74 Tuesday night in their home opener inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears (1-5) trailed by 10 (37-27) at halftime and to start the second half, LRU (5-4) outscored Shaw 27-14 in the third quarter to lead by as many as 26-points in that frame. The Lady Bears managed to claw their way back and gash at the deficit to pull within single digits, including a 33-18 scoring margin for Shaw but the visiting Bears held on for the win in the final seconds.
Taylor netted a career-high 37 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the field and 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point distance. Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) added 13 points, including 7-of-7 shooting from the free-throw line while senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) chipped in 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds. Taylor also finished with six rebounds.
For the contest, Shaw shot just 35 percent from the floor and hit 7-of-31 from behind the arc. At the charity stripe, the Lady Bears grooved 71 percent shooting (17-of-24).
LRU hit 43 percent from the field led by Madi Suddreth who finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kendall Toineeta recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists while Cassidy Joyner chipped in 12 points and both Kennedy Weigt and Olivia Nunn added 10 points apiece.
The Lady Bears will return to action Wednesday, Dec. 6 at William Peace for a makeup contest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
