This Week in CIAA Women’s Basketball Action

MARQUEE MATCHUP OF THE WEEK:

Tusculum Pioneers (5-2) at #9 Shaw Bears (1-0)                         Tuesday, December 11

Ninth ranked Shaw, the defending National and CIAA Champions, enters Tuesday’s game having not played a game since November 14 when they handily defeated Virginia University of Lynchburg 73-45 in their season opener.  In an odd bit of scheduling, the Lady Bears had nearly a month between their first and second game.  The season begins in earnest for Shaw on Tuesday as the Lady Bears play eight games over the final three weeks of December.  First up for Shaw are the Tusculum Pioneers, who enter the game at 5-2, including a 69-55 win over Rollins College,  who came into the game ranked fourth in the USA TODAY Division II Top 25 poll.  Kendal Baxter hit 10 three-pointers and finished with a career-high 37 points for the Pioneers in the November 23 upset.  The Pioneers are coming off a 57-34 loss to Winston-Salem State last Monday. Tusculum had handed the Lady Rams a 32-point win just two weeks ago.  Despite the loss, Tusculum remains a dangerous team and should provide a stern test for Lady Bears.  The Pioneers have made a habit of knocking off Top 10 teams the past few years.  In addition to the Rollins upset this year, the Pioneers knocked off 7th ranked Indianapolis 83-64 on the road two years ago and defeated top-ranked Clayton State 63-51 last season.

HOT HANDS:

Shaw Bears:

Kearah Jeffreys, Jr. G 5-4 (25 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals in season opener), Diamond Mitchell Jr. PG 5-4 (10 points, 6 assists, 7 rebounds in season opener), Crystal Wilson Sr. PG 5-8 (16 points, 3 assists, 5 rebounds in season opener),

Tusculum Pioneers:

Kendal Baxter, Sr. G 5-5 (15.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.1 apg; career high 37 in win over #4 Rollins), April McCann, Sr. G 5-8 (9.0 ppg, 8.4 rpg), Kristin McMillan, Fr. F 6-0 (6.1 rpg), Alisha Mosley, Jr. G 5-8 (8.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1.4 apg)

LAST TIME OUT:

Shaw 73           Virginia University-Lynchburg 45

Guard Kearah Jeffreys led a balanced offensive attack, scoring 25 points and pulling down eight rebounds as the Lady Bears won their season opener on November 14.  Crystal Wilson scored 16 points, Adana David added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Diamond Mitchell chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists as Shaw began defense of their 2012 Division II national title with an easy win over the VUL Dragons.

Tusculum 34   Winston-Salem State 57

Tusculum is coming off a surprising 57-34 loss to Winston-Salem State.  Following a 32-point win over Winston-Salem two weeks ago, Tusculum ran into a buzz saw this time around, as the Lady Rams shot 50 percent from the field while holding the Pioneers to 27.3 percent shooting.  Winston-Salem also forced 27 turnovers to snap the Lady Pioneers’ five-game winning streak.  Somalia McKenney led WSSU with 13 points and seven rebounds and Keyrra Gillespie added nine points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists for the Lady Rams.  April McCann paced the Pioneers with 11 points and eight rebounds and Alisha Mosley added 10 points.
