DURHAM, NC- North Carolina Central University and Virginia Union University went undefeated in day one of the 2005 CIAA Volleyball Championship to advance to the semifinals Saturday morning in Durham, NC.
Saint Augustine's College and Fayetteville State University will round out the semifinal field.
In spite of the fact that two teams went unblemished on day one, it would take all 12 matches to decide the seeds for Friday's semifinals.
The defending champion Lady Eagles secured first place in Pool B by downing Virginia State, Fayetteville State and Bowie State, while their opponents from last year's finals, Virginia Union, defeated Johnson C.
Smith, Elizabeth City State and Saint Augustine's to top Pool A.
The most interesting turn of events came with a two-way tie in Pool B between Bowie State and Fayetteville State, as both ended up with identical 1-2 records at the end of the day. Under closer observation, the Lady Broncos narrowly edged Bowie State in the tiebreaker since FSU won 5 of 22 games in pool play competition to 4 of 22 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Saturday's semifinals will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Walker Complex with North Carolina Central facing Saint Augustine's and Virginia Union squaring off against Fayetteville State. The winners will advance to compete for the 2005 CIAA Volleyball Championship at 6:00 p.m. Saturday in McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
