Bowie, MD (April 20, 2017) - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) kicks off its Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of Bowie State University tomorrow, April 21, 2017. Nine women’s and seven men’s teams will compete in the 2-day event for the conference championship titles. Events will commence at 9:00 a.m. both Friday and Saturday.
This year, Saint Augustine’s University will look to clinch their 20th consecutive CIAA Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship while the reigning ladies of Johnson C. Smith University will look to defend their title.
Saint Augustine’s University enters the meet ranked 5th among the men and 11th among the women in the NCAA Division II national rankings, as released by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) this week. The Falcons have won 19 consecutive CIAA Men’s Outdoor Championships while the Lady Falcons have won 14 of the last 20 CIAA Women’s Outdoor titles.
The Falcons are the four-time defending NCAA Division II Men’s Champions and the Lady Falcons are last year’s national women’s runner-up. Both teams have combined to win 38 NCAA Division II track and field indoor and outdoor titles under legendary Head Coach George Williams, who has won the most NCAA track and field titles of any college coach, regardless of division.
The reigning women’s champion, Johnson C. Smith University, enters the championship ranked 10th nationally and reflects severally nationally ranked student-athletes including Kendra Clarke who is ranked 2nd in Division II in the 400-meter dash. Other nationally ranked JCSU student-athletes to watch are Fellan Ferguson, who is ranked eighth in the 400-meter dash and third in the 800-meter while Sidney Marshall is ranks 10th in the 100-meter hurdles.
Other CIAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field participants include Bowie State University (host), Lincoln (PA) University, Livingstone College, Shaw University (women’s), Virginia State University, Virginia Union University, and Winston-Salem State University (women’s).
