Two Trojans Named to 2017 USTFCCCA All-Region Team

New Orleans, LA — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced the All-Region honorees for the 2016-17 NCAA Division II outdoor track & field season.  Two VSU Trojans were named to the team for a total of three recognition.

For the women Phontavia Sawyer (Virginia Beach, VA) secured a spot for her impressive performance this season in the shot put events. Sawyer is currently the schools record holder in the women’s shot put event. Phontavia claimed both championship titles at both the 2016-17 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association indoor and outdoor track & field championships in the shot put event.


On the men side senior Richard Crick (Richmond, VA) was recognized for his performance in both the long and triple jump events. Crick claimed the championship title at the 2017 Penn Relay’s in the triple jump event. Richard placed second in both the long and triple jump events during the 2017 CIAA outdoor track & field championship. 

Sawyer and Crick will compete at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track& Field Championships. The championships will be held May 25-27 in Bradenton, Florida at IMG Academy. The University of Tampa and IMG Academy will serve as co-hosts of the championships. The championships will be streamed live on NCAA.com each day. at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL.
