Five Falcons Claim National Track and Field Academic Awards

Five Saint Augustine’s College student-athletes were
selected to the 2009 Division II National All-Academic Track and
Field Teams by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association (USTFCCCA) this week. The Falcon members named to the
squads were Christopher Copeland, Jamal Cumberbatch, Orolando
Duffus, Ramon Gittens and Sheena Johns.
Copeland, a rising sophomore from Suffolk, Va., is a general
studies major with a 3.613 grade point average (GPA). He recently
tied for fifth in the high jump at the 2009 USA Junior National
Track and Field Championships in June. Copeland also placed third
nationally at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and
fifth nationally at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships
in the high jump.
Cumberbatch, a rising senior from St. Peters, Barbados, is a
communications major with a 3.308 GPA. He finished ninth nationally
in the triple jump at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor
Championships.
Duffus, a rising junior from Kingston, Jamaica, is a business
administration major with a 3.938 GPA. He competed in the triple
jump and long jump at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor
Championships.
Gittens, a rising junior from St. Michael, Barbados, is an
accounting major with a 3.521 GPA. He placed second at the 2009
NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships and third at the 2009 NCAA
Division II Indoor Championships in the 100 dash.
Gittens will run in the 2009 World Track and Field Championships in
Berlin, Germany in August.
Johns, a rising junior from Greenwood, Del., is a computer
information systems major with a 3.619 GPA. Johns was a member of
the women’s 4x100 relay team which finished second nationally
at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. Both the 4x100
team and the 4x400 team of which Johns was a part of won 2009 CIAA
Outdoor titles. The 4x400 squad also took the 2009 CIAA Indoor
crown as well.
The USTFCCCA honors Division II student-athletes for their academic
and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and
field season.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams, the
student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average
of 3.25 and have met the NCAA Division II Indoor and Outdoor
automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective
event.
