May 25, 2008
WALNUT, Calif. - Saint Augustine's College mounted a furious rally but Abilene Christian held on to win the men's national title Saturday evening (May 24) at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Despite winning four of 21 events and scoring points in four others, the Falcon men were edged by 6.5 points.
ACU led Saint Aug 88.5-56 with seven events remaining but the Falcons' Dennis Boone swept the 100m and 200m and the Falcons' 4x400m relay team of Josh Scott, Chris Cox, Antonio Abney and Randy Curry captured first place in the final event. Saint Aug's Joe Kindred won the high jump title on Friday.
ACU outlasted Saint Aug 108.5-102 to claim its sixth championship in seven years and 17th overall. The Falcons, who last won a men's title in 2001, took second for the third straight year. The margin was the closest since 2006 when ACU nipped Saint Aug 80-77.5.
The Wildcats winning margin was boosted by a 1-2 finish in the decathlon by Camille Vandendreissc and Chris Pounds. ACU won three events including head-to-head wins over Saint Aug in the 400m and 110h.
Virginia State finished 28th overall with 7.5 points.
CIAA athletes claimed four men's and one women's individual title.
In addition to Boone's double in the 100m and 200m, Kindred's victory in the high jump and St. Aug's 4x400m relay title, St. Aug's Barbara Pierre successfully defended her title in the 100 meters.
Abilene Christian's women won the overall title for the 10th time marking the seventh time that the teams have won both titles in the same year. St. Augustine's finished sixth overall with 37 points while Bowie State ranked 37th with five points.
