by Bears Sports Information Department

Raleigh, NC – Still in the hunt for the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Tournament, the Shaw University Lady Bears will host rival Saint Augustine's University in their home opener on Saturday, Apr. 14 at Worthdale Park. Game one is scheduled for 12 noon.

For the first time in program history, the doubleheader will offer live video and live stats from the Office of Media Relations on www.shawbears.com. As usual, fans can follow live tweets on Twitter @ShawBears.

The Lady Bears (8-12, 7-3 CIAA) stand in second place within the Southern Division with a 3-1 mark behind the Lady Falcons (11-7, 8-2 CIAA) who remain unbeaten at 4-0 in the South. Shaw split with Johnson C. Smith Wednesday, taking game one 5-4 but falling short in a 13-4 decision in the nightcap.

SU's offense has definitely peaked at a great time and has drastically improved from a season ago. As a team, the Lady Bears are batting .336 (4th in CIAA) but their opponent on Saturday has a reputation as one of the top slugging teams in the country as they average .365 – leading the conference. The Lady Falcons are coming off a 27-0, 18-0 at Livingstone Thursday.

Offensively, senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) leads the pack with a batting clip of .400 to go along with 11 RBI, four doubles, one triple and home run. CIAA Defensive Player of the Week in junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) averages .375 at the plate and is responsible for 16 RBI, two triples and two doubles. Kline and Rogers have combined for 22 of the Lady Bears 133 runs.

As for SAU, the Lady Falcons are led by MaKayla August (.492), Akera McPaul (.478) and Marley Parker (.464). The Lady Falcons post a 5-1 record on the road this season and currently ride a four-game winning streak under the leadership of Dot Neal.

Shaw has lost their last 13 games to SAU, the last time the Lady Bears won against the Lady Falcons was when both teams split during the 2012 season with SU taking game one 9-7 and SAU winning game two, 10-9.
