Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association cross country athletes Domtila Kiplagat of Winston-Salem State University and Luis Nieves of Virginia Union University have been named the Division II National Athletes of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Both Kiplagat and Nieves participated in last week's 2016 CIAA Cross Country Championship in Richomind, VA where the standout student-athletes claimed the Women's and Men's Individual Champion titles, respectively.
Kiplagat won her second straight CIAA Women's 5K crown with a time of 18:35.35. Also named 2016 CIAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, she ran the CIAA women's fastest time this year and was voted the Women's Runner of the Week four out of five weeks during the regular season.
Nieves claimed his second consecutive CIAA Men's 8K Individual Champion honor in 27:47.99. He, too, earned CIAA Cross Country Athlete of the Year on the men's side after posting the best time in the CIAA this year and being named CIAA Men's Runner of the Week three consecutive times.
