RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2016 season this Friday, Sept. 9th at the Barton College Invitational in Wilson, NC. The women's race will start at 6 p.m., followed by the men's race at 6:30 p.m.
For the women, the Lady Bears loss to key runners from a season ago, including by Jazmina Paris-Morris and Merideth Alexander who finished second and seventh, respectively in the 2015 CIAA Cross Country Championships. Shaw has seven returnees, junior Tearra Arrington (Newport News, VA), junior La'Cherie Clark (Raleigh, NC), sophomore Kyla Sanders (Hampton, VA), sophomore ShaTrika Lewis (Oxnard, CA), junior Briona May (Hampton, VA), junior Brianna Millner and the lone senior Muriel Evans (Sumter, SC).
With the addition of freshman Jhetame Lacan (Charlotte, NC) and under new leadership of first-year head coach Nadia Alexander-Pompey, Shaw will look to improve upon last year's campaign.
On the men's side, sophomore DayQuan Champman (Winterville, NC) highlights the Bears cross country program after finishing tenth overall to lead Shaw to a fifth place finish at the 2015 CIAA Cross Country Championships. Senior Alfonso Boone (Emporia, VA) and sophomore Michael Mason (Williamsburg, VA) join Chapman as the returners in addition to two newcomers that include freshman Isiah Gaddy (Norwalk, CT) and Mauricio Gonzalez (Leon, Mexico).
Coach Alexander-Pompey is also hopeful to improve upon the Bears 2015 campaign heading into Friday's meet.
Following Saturday's meet, Shaw will head to Cary, NC to compete in the Adidas XC Challenge hosted by North Carolina State on Sept. 16.
