Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State University begins the women's and men's cross country season on Friday, September 9th at the Barton Invitational at J. Burt Gillette Park in Wilson, NC. The women's 5k race is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's 8k event at approximately 6:15 p.m.
The standout returners for FSU are sophomore Richard Prudente-Bernal (Fayetteville, NC) and senior Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC). Prudente-Bernal had the top time in the 2015 CIAA Cross Country Championships (28:48) and finished 12th overall in the event. Gladden had the third fastest time for FSU at the conference championships and placed in the top 40.
"I feel strong about this year; we have a great chance to finish in the top tier of the CIAA," said head cross country coach Tyreece Brown. "Richard (Prudente-Bernal) could really be the best runner in the conference this year. He has worked hard over the summer to get stronger and faster and I believe his hard work will pay off. Ivory (Gladden) had the experience and leadership that will push our women's team to be better each meet."
After the opener on Friday, the regular season continues at the Methodist University Monarch Invitational on Saturday, September 17th, the Greensboro XC Invitational on Saturday, September 24th, the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge on Saturday, October 1st, the Livingstone Invitational on Friday, October 7th, and the CIAA Championships on Thursday, October 27th at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, NC.
"This upcoming meet at Barton will be a great measuring stick for us to compare times throughout the season," stated Brown.
