Shaw Bears Earn Second Consecutive CIAA Men’s Tennis Championship

PETERSBURG, VA -The Shaw University Men's Tennis Team swept the championship singles round of the CIAA Men's Tennis Tournament and came away with their second consecutive title, scoring 72 points to second place Johnson C. Smith University's 62. Host Virginia State finished third with 48 points as the action at the 2006 CIAA Men’s Tennis Championships from the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA came to a close.
The Golden Bulls and Shaw Bears met in all three doubles finals matches on Wednesday and met in five of the six singles finals on Sunday.
After the first day of competition, the Bears had a three-point advantage over JCSU as they had tallied 24 points to the Golden Bull’s 21. The Bears extended their lead to the eventual 10-point margin in the singles round.
SU's #1 singles player, Kabiru Ibrahim extended his three-year win streak to 57 in a row winning three straight titles in the tournament. Ibrahim was also named tournament MVP for the second straight year. Ibrahim defeated Justin Stuckey of J.C. Smith 6-2, 6-4 to win the #1 singles title.
