Five CIAA Student-Athletes Named To NCCSIA All-State Teams

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association would like to congratulate three student-athletes who received honors from the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Team (NCCSIA), which consist of sports information professionals from NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. 

Qunicy January, a junior at Saint Augustine's University was named to (NCCSIA) All-State Men's Basketball First Team in the collegiate division, for the second year in a row.  Last season, he was a second-team selection.  The Falcons forward captured his fourth postseason honor since February 2017.  The talented junior averaged 16.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals this season for the Falcons. The CIAA rebounding leader, January ranked ninth in Division II in double doubles (16), 16th in rebounds per game and 19th in total rebounds (300). He also ranked second in Division II in free throw attempts (245) and was the only player in the CIAA to average double figures in points and rebounds. January shot 58 percent from the floor, which tied for second in the CIAA.

Johnson C. Smith University junior Robert Davis has also been named to the NCCSIA All-State Second Team in the College Division.  Davis, a product of West Friendship, Maryland, completed his junior campaign as the top scorer for the Golden Bulls at 17.4 points per game, ranking third in the CIAA. He also led the league in minutes played (36.9) and was third in free throw percentage (83.5%).  He scored in double-figures in 25 of the 28 games in which he played including a career-high 46 points in JCSU's double-overtime loss at Winston-Salem State on Feb. 15.

Winston-Salem State University's Robert Colon has been named to the NCCSIA all-state men's basketball second-team.  Named the 2016-17 CIAA Rookie of the Year, Colon averaged 17.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Colon also averaged 1.2 assists and 0.8 steals per game. Colon also scored in double figures 21 different times, and led the Rams in scoring on 14 different occasions. He led the team in steal eight times and led WSSU in assists seven times.

Johnson C. Smith University junior Blaire Thomas was named as a second-team selection to the NCCSIA College Division team.  Thomas, from Waterloo, Iowa, helped the JCSU women's basketball team to the second CIAA Championship in program history. The Golden Bulls downed regionally ranked Bowie State and nationally ranked Virginia Union on the way to the CIAA title.  Thomas averaged 13.0 points per game and was fifth in the league in field goal percentage (78.9%). For her performances, she was named an All-CIAA First Team pick and was named the CIAA Tournament Most Valuable Player. 

Shaw University junior LaQuisha Taylor has also been awarded to the NCCSIA all-second team.  Taylor led the Lady Bears women's basketball team in scoring, averaging 19.1 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per outing. For the season, Taylor shot 47.7 percent from the field, including 39.2 percent from long distance. The 5-foot-8 forward registered 12 games in double digit scoring, including nine games where she scored 20 or more points while recording five double-doubles on the season and two 30 point games in 15 games played on the year.

The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools.  Nominees for the honors were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
  Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.  NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, softball, and baseball.
