Bowie State Bulldogs Advance in CIAA Tournament with 78-75 OT Victory

Charlotte, NC (February 22, 2017) –  A quick start from both teams, as the game started 8-7 and Johnson C. Smith University's Malik Ford opened the scoring.  He was answered by Bowie State University's, Michael Briscoe, who made one of two free throws. The contest ended in an overtime battle with Bowie State advancing to the next round with the 78-75 victory over Johnson C. Smith.

With the win, Bowie State improves to 13-15 overall, while Johnson C. Smith finishes its season at 11-17.

Johnson C. Smith would surge ahead 14-11 on a made basket by Gabon Williams to take the early lead. Williams would add a three pointer with 11:55 remaining to put the Golden Bulls up 17-11.

The game would settle and the teams began a time where the game was very sloppy on both ends. Lot of fouls, missed shot and blown opportunities would be the center of attention for several minutes.

The game would go a few minutes scoreless, as neither team could find the basket, and back to back three pointers from Ahmaad Wilson would give Bowie state the lead, 22-21. Wilson would then come up with a steal and drain another 3-pointer to five BSU a 24-21 advantage.

The BSU Bulldogs would continue to pressure the JCSU Golden Bulls, and would take a 32-31 half time lead into the locker room.

Bowie State was led at halftime by Ahmaad Wilson, who single handedly kept the Bulldogs in the game by scoring 24 first half points, on eight of 11 shots, including 6 of 7 shooting from behind the three point arc. Omari George added seven points for Bowie State.

Johnson C. Smith was led by Christian Williams, who scored 13 first half points and pulled down five rebounds. Robert Davis added six points and three rebounds and Gabon Williams also added six points and pulled down five rebounds.

The first half featured three ties and three lead changes, while the Golden Bulls dominate the points in the paint with a 14-4 edge.

Johnson C. Smith shot 43% from the floor in the first half, while holding Bowie State to just 34%.

Bowie State open the second half controlling the clock and taking a 34-31 lead, before the Golden Bulls were able to settle down and get a free throw from Robert Davis to take a 34-32 advantage.

Gabon Williams got the Golden Bulls to within three points at 38-35 on a three pointer from deep in the corner.

A Robert Davis jump shot would get JCSU to within two points at 39-37.

The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith would assume the lead with 14:22 to play, by the score of 40-39.

A three point play the old fashioned way by Bowie's David Belle put the Bulldogs back on top, before the Golden Bulls quickly answered with back to back baskets to regain the lead.

A Bowie State three pointer would tie the game at 45-45, and Omari George would give BSU the lead on a jumper from the paint, 48-45.

The Golden Bulls' Cayse Minor would tie the game on a 3-pointer, to make the score, 48-48.

BSU's Enuoma Ebinum scored on a inside move to give the Bulldogs a 54-48 lead, and on a key possession midway through the half, the BSU Bulldogs would come up with a key offensive rebound to keep the possession and stop the Golden Bulls from getting any closer.

Michael Briscoe dropped a dagger from behind the arc on a shot at the clock buzzer to give BSU a 57-52 lead.

Robert Davis would pull JCSU close, with the tough running banker 58-54.

Johnson C. Smith got a huge rebound and basket from Gabon Williams with 3:45 left to play! But missed the free throw to get any closer.

Robert Davis went to the line with 3:15 remaining, and made two to tie the game at 59-59.

BSU's Dayshawn Wells hit a big three at 2:20 to give BSU the 62-59 lead, and then would go back to back for a 65-61 advantage!

After two JCSU free throws, Bowie State would lead 65-63!!

Omari George would come up with a big defensive play, a steal with 50 seconds left, and then would make one of two free throws to give  the Bulldogs the lead.

And then the shot of the night, JCSU's Aaron Adair would tie the game on a three pointer!

Christian Williams three at the buzzer went off the rim, sending the game to OVERTIME!

Michael Briscoe gave BSU the first two points of overtime on free throws, before JCSU's Robert Davis ties it up on a leaner in the paint.

Ahmaad Wilson would give BSU the lead, before Aaron Adair ties it up on a three pointer, and he would then pick up the old fashioned and one with 1:55 left, to give Bowie State a 72-70 lead. Wilson would connect on the free throw to give BSU a 73-70 advantage.

Johnson C. Smith's Robert Davis would answer with a jumper to cu the lead to 73-72, before BSU's

Michael Briscoe hit a unbelievable off-balance three to give the Bulldogs a 76-72 lead with 26.1 left.

JCSU's Gabon Williams would connect on a jumper and BSU's Ahmaad Wilson would make one of two free throws to give BSU a 78-75, advantage that they would ride out for a win.

Tonight's overtime game was the first between these two proud CIAA institutions since January 15, 2002. Bowie State also won that game 91-89, as it was also played in Charlotte. Bowie State moves to 3-1 all-time versus Johnson C. Smith.

Johnson C. Smith was led by Gabon Williams who finished with 21 points, and eight rebounds, while Robert Davis added 20 points and seven rebounds. Christian Williams chipped in 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

For Bowie State, Ahmaad Wilson scored a career-high 30 points to go with four rebounds, and Omari George added 15 points and seven rebounds. Michael Briscoe also added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Bowie State will now advance to face Virginia Union at 7:00pm on Thursday evening at Spectrum Center.
