Raleigh, NC (February 11) – On Saturday, Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) poured in 28 points as Saint Augustine's University topped crosstown rival Shaw University 66-59 in a CIAA men's basketball contest at packed Emery Gymnasium.
Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC) added 16 points for the Falcons, who made 10 of 22 three-point attempts for 45.5 percent. Gaskins and Collins combined to hit 9 of 16 threes including a 4 of 4 shooting effort from Collins.
Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) recorded 13 points and 14 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season. He entered the game ranked 15th nationally in Division II in the category.
January canned two free throws with four seconds left to seal the victory for the Falcons, who connected on 12 of 15 free throw attempts for 80 percent. The Falcons (2-6 Southern Division, 11-14 overall) swished eight straight free throws in the final 1:21 to maintain their lead after the Bears rallied from a 17-point deficit to get within 58-56.
The Falcons built a 56-39 lead in the second half on the third of three straight three-pointers by Collins, who had 11 points in the second half. The Bears (6-2 Southern Division, 12-12 overall) then began their run before the Falcons held them off at the free throw line.
Benji Bell scored 21 points for the Bears, who were limited to 32 percent shooting. DeAngelo Stephens-Bell and DeVaughn Kelsie each added 11 points.
The Falcons will visit Livingstone College in their last away game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The contest begins at 7:30 p.m. at New Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C.
