Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team topped Saint Augustine's University in the closing seconds of a divisional clash on Saturday, January 28th at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU improves to 9-10 overall, 5-6 in the CIAA, and 3-2 in the division, while the Falcons drop to 10-12 overall, 4-7 in the conference, and 1-4 in the Southern.
The game was a low scoring affair with a clutch, heroic finish by senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC). At the half, the Falcons held onto a meager 29-28 advantage. Junior guard Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) had a first half team-high of seven points. Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) followed with six points and two steals.
There were seven lead changes and four ties in the second half alone. Jquwan Ruffin made a three pointer with 2:21 left to play, which gave SAU a 53-52 lead. Gilmore made one free throw on the next possession to tie the game 53-53 with 1:49 on the clock.
Following two missed field goal attempts by Saint Augustine's, redshirt sophomore forward William Tibbs (Winston-Salem, NC) grabbed the defensive rebound with 25 seconds remaining. Head coach Ken Spencer took a 30-second timeout with 16 seconds left.
Dawson dribbled some time off the clock before pulling up for a 17-foot jumper. He drained the shot leaving 1.5 seconds. Anthony Gaskins launched an off target half-court shot as time expired. Fayetteville State celebrated their second consecutive victories thanks to the buzzer beater by Dawson.
Bryant concluded the contest with a game-high 19 points, along with four boards and two steals. Dawson had 11 points and five assists, including the game winner.
Kenneth Collins had 12 points and three rebounds for the Falcons. Quincy January added 10 points and seven rebounds for SAU.
The Broncos outscored Saint Augustine's 32-18 in the paint, 21-8 off turnovers, and 16-6 in second chance points.
Fayetteville State will play at home again for their next matchup against Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, February 4th. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Capel Arena.
