Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team defeated Northern Division foe Bowie State University 80-71 on Monday, January 9th at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU improves to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the CIAA, while the Bulldogs fall to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the conference standings.
There were four ties and six lead changes in the first half. The Broncos edged Bowie State 30-27 in the initial period. Sophomore guard Isaiah Vinson (Fayetteville, NC) sank two free throws to record the last two points of the opening frame. FSU led the Bulldogs in points in the paint (14-4), points off turnovers (8-2), and second chance points (5-0) at the break.
Senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) had 10 points and four boards at the half. Enuoma Ebinum paced BSU with 12 points going into the second half.
The Broncos maintained a lead for the entire second half. Bowie State trailed by as much as 10 and knocked their deficit down to one (47-46) with 10:15 on the clock. Ahmaad Wilson made a three-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to bring BSU within one possession (72-69). However, solid free throwing shooting from FSU in the closing seconds seal the victory.
Dawson concluded the contest with a season-high 28 points, along with nine rebounds and five assists. Senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC) added 13 points and nine boards. Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) contributed with 10 points and four rebounds.
Wilson led Bowie State with 28 points and seven rebounds. Ebinum and Dayshawn Wells finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
FSU shot 40% (22-54) from the field compared to 32% (19-58) shooting from the Bulldogs.
The Broncos return to the court on Saturday, January 14th against divisional rival Johnson C. Smith University. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte, NC.
