Virginia State Tops JCSU Men's Basketball, 75-62

Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 9, 2017) –
Visiting Virginia State University shot 47.3% from the field and got 21 points from guard Kevin Williams to down Johnson C. Smith University 75-62 in CIAA men's basketball play at Brayboy Gym on Monday evening.

The Trojans (12-3, 4-1 CIAA) raced out to an early 13-5 lead after a Richard Granberry basket and never looked back the rest of the way. The Trojans would then take a 15-point lead at 25-10 after an Elijah Moore three-pointer at the 11:24 mark.

JCSU would then trim the Trojan cushion to 26-15 after a Michael Stephenson basket, but VSU embarked on a 15-0 run over the last 2:24 of the first half to take the 52-29 lead at the break.

In the second half, VSU would steadily build the lead, going ahead by as many as 30 points at the 12:01 mark following a Trey Brown three-pointer than made it 68-38.

JCSU would chip away at the VSU lead but could get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way as VSU took the 75-62 win.

In addition to Williams' 21 points, VSU got 17 from Moore and 11 from Waymond Wright.  The Trojans were able to connect for 10 three-pointers on the night, good for a 52.6% percentage from long range while JCSU also managed 10 long balls, but hit at only a 28.6% clip.

JCSU (6-8, 2-2 CIAA) would get 16 points from Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) in the loss. Kirchman's junior teammates Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) and
Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) each had 13 points for the Golden Bulls.

JCSU will continue CIAA play on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they host Fayetteville State in CIAA Southern Divisional play. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
